Grand Theft Auto 6 is arguably the most anticipated video game in history. Rockstar Games has been notoriously secretive about the project, but between the official trailer (which broke YouTube records), leaked development footage, and carefully parsed Rockstar statements, we know a surprising amount about what’s coming. Here’s everything confirmed and credibly rumored about GTA 6 as of 2025.
GTA 6 Release Date: When Is It Coming Out?
Rockstar Games has confirmed GTA 6 is targeting a Fall 2025 release window for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. PC players will likely have to wait 12-18 months after console launch, which is consistent with Rockstar’s historical release pattern (GTA V launched on PC 18 months after consoles).
Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, has confirmed the Fall 2025 window in multiple investor calls, though a specific date has not yet been announced. Most industry analysts expect an announcement in mid-2025 with a September or October release.
The Setting: Welcome Back to Vice City
GTA 6 is set in a fictionalized version of Miami and the surrounding South Florida area, returning to the beloved Vice City setting from GTA: Vice City (2002). But this isn’t your 2002 Vice City. The new map is reportedly the largest and most detailed in Rockstar history, featuring:
- A massive, sprawling Miami-inspired city with distinct neighborhoods
- The Florida Everglades — a huge rural/wilderness area
- Multiple smaller cities and towns across the state
- A living, evolving world that changes over time (similar to Red Dead Redemption 2’s dynamic world)
- Interiors for nearly every major building
The Characters: A First for the Series
GTA 6 makes history by introducing the first female protagonist in a mainline GTA game. The confirmed protagonists are:
- Lucia — A Latina woman who appears to be the primary protagonist based on the trailer
- Jason — Her partner-in-crime, described as a local Florida man type
The trailer presents them as a Bonnie-and-Clyde style duo, and the story appears to follow their criminal partnership across Vice City. The dual-protagonist system is expected to work similarly to GTA V’s character-switching mechanic.
GTA Online 2: The Real Money-Maker
While the single-player story is what fans are most excited about, let’s be real: GTA Online 2 is where Rockstar makes its billions. The new online mode is expected to launch alongside GTA 6 with a completely rebuilt infrastructure, improved anti-cheat systems (a massive complaint from GTA Online players), and new social features.
Rockstar has reportedly learned from GTA Online’s rocky launch and is planning a more stable, content-rich day-one experience for GTA 6 Online.
What Console Do You Need for GTA 6?
GTA 6 is a current-gen exclusive — PS5 and Xbox Series X/S only. There will be no PS4 or Xbox One version. This means if you’re still on last-gen hardware, now is the time to upgrade. Here’s what we recommend:
🎮 PlayStation 5
Given that GTA 6 was shown running on PS5 in all official materials, the PS5 is the natural home for this game. The DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are expected to be deeply integrated.

GTA 6 is going to be a marathon gaming event. Whether you’re planning a launch-day all-nighter or just want the best possible experience, here’s what to grab:

Our Take: Will GTA 6 Live Up to the Hype?
Rockstar Games has never released a bad GTA game. Their track record — GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, GTA IV, GTA V — is arguably the greatest run in gaming history. With a reported development budget north of $2 billion and over 1,000 developers working on it, GTA 6 has the resources to match its ambition.
Will it be perfect at launch? Probably not — no game of this scale ever is. But will it be the most impressive open-world game ever made? Almost certainly yes.
